Not everyone knows, but historically were the friars to push the population of beer consumption. They were the years of the middle ages and the fermentation process was able to render the water potable, at that time, was the vehicle of diseases.
I have just seven in the world, the abbeys where the true Trappist beer. Six are in Belgium (Orval, Chimay, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren and Achel), one is located in the Netherlands. The beers here are produced, they are much sought after by fans, but taste them and buying them is not so simple. A small linguistic clarification at this point is d requirement: the beers produced by the same process, but outside the abbeys (licensed anyway) are called d Abbey beers and Trappist beers. Returning to the latter, Rochefort, lies the Abbey of Notre Dame de Saint Rémy.
Here, protected by stained-glass, c is the brasserie: Trappist monks and young workers rummage at the same time the malt and the spring water in the shade of a crucifix hanging on the wall. Result of much work are authentic beers from meditation, to be drunk too cold not to appreciate the taste with hints of chocolate. Rochefort beers are of three types with three different gradations, and can be bought only in the country in peddling of Rochefort, saw that the brothers do not sell their products directly. The canteen is an excellent address to buy the excellent cheeses produced in the Abbey.
The Abbey of Orval produces a beer legère instead. A beer that should be taken: it can only taste at the Inn L ange gardien and you can’t buy. Its particularity is the aromatization with hops flowers. The Abbey of Notre Dame du Scourmont in Chimay, by contrast, produces three varieties of beers. The Chimay rose, is a beer of reddish brown, with a blackcurrant fragrance. The Chimay Blanche has a bitter taste. The Chimay Blue is soft and fruity. These three beers, which are bottled at about ten miles away in Baileux, can be purchased only at the Auberge de Poteaupré. In the garden you can also enjoy a glass of beer accompanied by a plate of escargots or from a selection of local cheeses.
